USA –
Into the Midwest
In August 2022, I had the opportunity to visit some of the most amazing and yet strange places in North America. I traveled with my father for almost a month through eleven states. Our journey began in one of the most crime-ridden cities in the world: Chicago. From there we took the California Zephyer Transcontinental Train and traveled for 38 hours along the endless fields of the Great Plains and across the Colorado Rockies to the Mormon desert capitol of Salt Lake City.
Continuing from the Salt Lake area, we threw our belongings, which in my case consisted mostly from camera gear, into a small campervan and hit the road. We came across some more and some less touristy places, some of them known from big hollywood movies like «2001: A Space Odyssey» or indie experimental productions like «Koyaanisqatsi». Yellowstone (a little big dream of mine), Goblin Valley, Capitol Reef, Kodachrome Valley, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Vermillion Cliffs, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, Dead Horse Canyon, Canyonlands and Arches National Park to name a few.
I knew that I liked landscape photography but I was so impressed and inspired by what I saw in the Midwest. I had been to the USA a few times before, but I had never perceived the country as complex as it is. T hrough this style of traveling, becoming part of the camper community and actually talking to Americans about almost everything going right and wrong in the country, I got to know a completely new side.
Initially I had thought about recording a short documentary film but then again I was drawn more to explore first by capturing moved and still images, which also wasn’t always easy since I was carrying up to 3 different cameras everywhere. My father also often had to be patient... Now I’m looking back to so many memories and I returned not only with a sketchbook filled with new realizations, ideas and thoughts but also with a stronger bond to my father.
